Sentry Watch
I wonder?
Over the last few days as often in my weekly schedule, I drive others to doctor appointments or hospital.
A mundane task for the most part where the traffic in my way offers more conversation than the delivery itself, for the patient has been doing so for great lengths of time.
Time has a way of dulling the horrors of chronic and sometimes fatal conditions into almost a routine adventure. I can not stress almost enough, for no matter the number of visits, in the back of the patient’s mind lives doubt.
So on this day, last Friday, I had the pleasure of chauffeur and aide more than one soul.
The hospital visit was the last of the day, and I gave it little thought for it entailed a small test for the patient to endure, actually several all of us are quite familiar with.
Once done dropping them at the door I parked at the furthest end of the lot to enjoy the day’s weather and allow my mind to wander.
After five or ten minutes I noticed an enormous Raven in the tree before me to the right.
Being a Poe enthusiast I mentally began having a conversation with the beauty.
A few minutes later another of equal size joined us to the left front of my vehicle, upon the top of the parking light fixture.
WOW, I thought, this is getting interesting, so I continued to have faux chat with the fellow on the right.
Shortly afterward, two more blackbirds join us, one more to the tree in front on the right, another in a tree behind me to the right.
Looking around I see these are the only ones in the area, not one single other bird of any other type.
So here I sit with my very own murder, then my mind blanks for I haven’t any idea what to discuss with such creatures.
A minute later three of the birds leave to rest atop the hospital emergency roof while the original visitor stares at me. My phone pings with text, time for pickup.
The Raven flies to a tree where I must turn to pick up the patient and waits.
Unusual timing I think to myself, so I lower my window as I stroll up to the blackbird.
“Thanks for keeping me company”
The Raven turns it back to me and I drive on.
I can’t help wondering what I’ve just experienced, a common occurrence or another.
Easily entertained comes to mind.
