What does it mean to be a friend?
Over my first cup of coffee.
Often involves sacrifice as well as good times. Giving the last drop of your essence, to receive hugs and unbreakable love.
Friendship, in some ways, has suffered a pivotal change in recent times. Believe it or not, there was a time when a friend was someone you cared for deeply, period.
Their social status, business holdings, or esthetics had little or nothing to do with how you felt about them. There was little concern, competition, or thought of what they could do for you.
Your contact list was bulging with people who cared about you and wanted nothing more than to spend time with you. Sure you had some who may have begun as business-people, but they wormed their way into your heart nonetheless.
Now before you tag this share as mumbling s from your grandparents’ lips. Take a minute to think about what has been said. Pop open your cell phone contacts and take a good hard look at it. How many of them is someone you can call anytime for help, no matter how messy the situation?
Don’t be shy, scroll through that long list of names, and be brutal, but most importantly be honest with yourself. This exercise is as much of a test of your substance as those listed on your phone. Be brave.
How many listed would disrupt their life and risk losing everything for you?
Not exactly the fun and interesting test you might expect, I understand.
Those of you who have found more than one person, I applaud you. Especially if you were honest with yourself in the search. You must be exceptional.
To those who have less than one, not including family. Fret not for you are the new normal. Congratulations on your discovery and bravery.
Right about now, some of you think I have a very poor attitude toward friendship. On the contrary, I hold it in the highest regard for real friends, I’m merely pointing out their rarity.
In doing so giving you a heads-up on those who truly deserve your attention. Once they wake up today (Since it’s 5:54 am CST here), text them, phone them, dare I say it, write them and let them know how special they are to you.
